SEO Tamil: ranking a vernacular education brand in a language the tools barely support

SEO Tamil and Digital Marketing Tamil teach search and digital marketing in Tamil, feeding a YouTube channel of the same name. It is the smallest of our properties by traffic and the most awkward to do properly, because almost every tool an SEO relies on has poor Tamil keyword data, and the audience is spread across India, Sri Lanka and the Gulf. It is also the most direct proof we have: if we could not rank a site about SEO, that would tell you something.

The problem

Why a vernacular language is harder, not easier

The usual assumption is that a non-English language means less competition and easy rankings. The competition is thinner. Everything else is worse.

The work

What the work consists of

A deliberately small site. Twenty six pages carry the whole property, which is the opposite of the volume strategy most education sites run.

  1. Few pages, each aimed at a head term

Rather than hundreds of thin lesson pages, a handful of comprehensive ones, each targeting a term somebody would actually search when they decide to learn this.

    • One substantial page per head term, covering the subject properly rather than teasing a course
    • The course, the tools and the expert pages kept separate, because they answer different intents
    • Both scripts and both spellings accounted for, including transliterated forms
    • English technical vocabulary retained where learners use it, rather than translated into unfamiliar formal Tamil
    • Author identity on the page: a named practitioner, with checkable work, which matters more in a teaching niche than in any other
  2. Search and video treated as one system

The YouTube channel and the sites answer the same questions in different formats, and each is the other's distribution.

    • Video for the parts of the subject that are demonstrated rather than read
    • Written pages for the parts people need to search back to and copy from
    • Cross-linking so a viewer can find the reference and a reader can find the walkthrough
  3. Technical work, on ourselves

The site is also the place we prove the technical work, since a slow, badly structured site about SEO is an argument against hiring us.

    • Structured data matching what the page visibly says
    • Internal linking built around the order somebody learns the subject in
    • Fast, light pages, with the technical fundamentals we would apply for a client applied here first

Nearly a quarter of queries in the top three, on 26 pages. The tail past position 20 is mostly transliterated variants and long questions that no page targets directly yet, which is a fair description of where the work goes next.

The expert page. In a teaching niche, who is talking matters as much as what is said, so it is a page rather than a byline.

The reason this property is in the portfolio is not its traffic, which is modest. It is that the subject and the service are the same thing, and the result is checkable by searching the term yourself.
